The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will open the newly constructed bridge near the Kadavanthra market . The bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city.
Public Works Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju will inaugurate the bridge at 3 pm. The work on the bridge had begun on May 20, and it was completed in five months. Korean technology was used in the construction of the bridge, which did not require pillars. “This is the first time Korean technology was used to construct a bridge in Kerala. It is more popular in Maharashtra and Gujarat. We had to import the components and materials required for the construction. A crane was used to assemble the structures,” said GCDA Chairman N Venugopal.
The arch bridge, which has been built using corrugated-steel, connects Gandhi Nagar with the eastern entrance to the Ernakulam Junction railway station.
The bridge has been constructed over the Perandoor canal. A major advantage of the new technology is that it will not block the water flow in the canal, which is an arterial waterway in the city.
